Building Energy Modelling

SDS Energy

SDS provided Energy Modelling and Calculations for multiple Premier Inn Hotels

Our team of certified Energy Assessors are highly adept in IES VE Simulation and DSM which allows them to provide consistent and reliable evaluations of energy use in buildings for Building Regulations Compliance and for Building Energy Performance Certification (EPC) purposes.

Calculations provide an analysis of a building’s energy consumption through analysis of monthly energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions while taking into consideration the building’s use, geometry, construction, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) and lighting equipment.

SBEM – Simplified Building Energy Model & SAP – Standard Assessment Procedure

SDS is a specialist provider of SBEM and SAP calculations for Part L (Part F for N. Ireland) compliance for both domestic and non-domestic buildings, new builds, extensions and refurbishments in relation to EPCs and BERs. We also provide SBEM calculations for Ene 01 BREEAM Assessments.

Our quotes can include the following components:

  • Design Stage Part L/F Compliant Calculations and BRUKL Report
  • Draft Energy Certificates
  • As Built Part L/F Compliant Calculations and BRUKL Report
  • Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) / Building Energy Rating (BER)
  • Lodgement Fee
  • Dynamic Simulation Modelling

Note that although SBEM and SAP calculations may assist the design process, it is not primarily a design tool. For example, it does not calculate internal temperatures.

If the performance of a particular feature is critical to the design, even if it can be represented in SBEM, it is prudent to use the most appropriate modelling tool for design or resizing purposes. Please refer to DSM – Dynamic Simulation Modelling for more information.

DSM – Dynamic Simulation Modelling

Similar to SBEM, Dynamic Simulation Modelling provides a calculation of the predicted energy consumed within a non-domestic building, through the modelling of the building’s features.

While both methods are approved for undertaking compliance assessments, DSM provides a significantly more accurate and complex assessment. In the majority of cases DSM offers the design team significant benefits.

The team of Energy Assessors at SDS are trained and accredited in the use of industry-leading DSM software, IES Virtual Environment. We can provide the following services:

  • Thermal Analysis
  • Overheating Analysis
  • Daylight Calculations
  • Low Zero Carbon Technologies (LZCT)
  • Solar Shading Analysis
  • Energy Statements

Our DSM quotes can include the following components:

  • Design Stage DSM Part L/F Compliant Calculations and BRUKL Report*
  • Draft Energy Certificates
  • As Built DSM Part L/F Compliant Calculations and BRUKL Report*
  • Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) / Building Energy Rating (BER)
  • Lodgement Fee
  • BREEAM Assessment*

The DSM process can gain additional BREEAM credits in the following categories:

  • Hea 1 – Daylighting
  • Hea 3 – Glare Control
  • Hea 10 – Thermal Comfort
  • Ene 1 – Energy & CO2 Emissions
  • Ene 5 – Low & Zero Carbon Technologies

*As we can use DSM Modelling to produce Part L/F  compliance documentation we can also provide these additional BREEAM credit services from our original model. This can therefore be a very cost effective solution to ensure building regulation and planning compliance as well as BREEAM targets.
